O What a Saviour(s)!
In my title, I pluralized the word Saviour because He saved us from things other than hell. He is not just a fire escape that shows up at our death and snatches us from the burning.
He is our Saviour from Society
The Biblical word for society is world. In Galatians 1:4 Paul says, “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world …” (society). This verse does not refer to delivering us out of the world at the rapture, but delivering us from it’s power while we are in it. In 2 Peter 2:20 we read, “For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, …” Once again in John 17:15 Jesus said, “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” (of it). It is obvious that none of these verses refer to saving us from the world’s presence, but the world’s power.
Jesus is the One who saves us from this present evil world (i.e. the society in which we live). Think of all the evil this world has that we have been delivered from: Same-sex marriage, homosexuality, abortion, pornography, and adultery … need I go on? O WHAT A SAVIOUR that delivers us from society.
He is our Saviour from Self
If you want to know what you are capable of, read Romans chapters 1-3 or Genesis chapter 6. Neither time nor space would permit listing the sins mentioned in these chapters. Lest you think He is speaking of somebody else, read Romans 2:1, “… for thou that judgest doest the same things.” Or Romans 3:19, “… all the world may become guilty before God.” Or Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Another index of what we are capable of is what we are tempted with or by. Have you ever been surprised at the depth of your wickedness as revealed to you by what tempts you? Truly, “… There is none righteous, no, not one:” (Romans 3:10). Let us quit denying the wickedness that lurks in fallen nature, and start praising the Saviour for delivering us from participating in it or forgiving us if we do. In Romans 7:24, Paul cried, “… who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” And then he cried in vs. 25, “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. …” O WHAT A SAVIOUR that delivers me from self.
He is our Saviour from Sin
There is only One who is both willing and able … JESUS … a true kinsman redeemer! The place He saved us from is hell, the lake of fire. Hell is described as a place where:
- “… their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” (Mark 9:44)
- “… I am tormented in this flame.” (Luke 16:24)
- “… there is a great gulf fixed: …” (Luke 16:26)
- “… eternal fire.” (Jude 7)
- “… the smoke of their torment ascended up for ever and ever: …” (Revelation 14:11)
These are some of the words used to describe the eternal duration of time spent there. Could you join me in exclaiming to Him on the throne, O WHAT A SAVIOUR, who saves us from society, self, and sin.
