The Lord Sent the Word
Psalm 18:30, “… the word of the LORD is tried: …”
The questions are: Who has tried the Word of the Lord? Under what circumstances? What were the results?
In Creation
We see God the Father trying His Word in creation. He tried it on the darkness and the darkness became light. He tried it on the firmament and it divided the waters. He tried it on the seas and dry land appeared. He tried it on the earth and it brought forth grass, herbs, and trees. He tried it in the skies and they were filled with the sun, the moon, and the stars. After six days of speaking to this situation, we read the results: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. …” (Genesis 1:31). God said it … and it was so.
In Times of Combat
Jesus the Son tried the Word in times of combat. We see Him in mortal combat with Satan in the wilderness and His weapon of choice was the precious Word of God. The devil tempted Him three times and each time He defended Himself by interjecting God’s Word into battle; and we see Him living in and leaving the wilderness victorious.
In the Calling
The Holy Spirit tried the Word in the calling out of men to service, sending them into a world that was godless to preach the gospel. In Acts 13:2 the Holy Spirit said, “… Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.” Based upon the Holy Spirit’s Word, we see Paul and Barnabas boarding a ship that would take them on three missionary journeys in ten years, to 37 seaports and over 100 cities, on continents with thousands of converts because the Word of the Lord, when tried, works.
We know that God preserved His Word accurately. What we also must not forget is that God preserved His Word in its original power. Do we have the same Word to try that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit used? Of course – the answer is yes. If it is not in its original power, why then are we told to claim its promises in prayer?
Colossians 1:16-17, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” The same powerful Word that made all things is now causing them to continue.
What is the answer to the question: Who has tried it? The answer is: The Trinity. Under what circumstances? They used it in creation; they used it in combat; and they used it in the calling out of men. What were the results? In every case, the results were victory over adverse conditions.
The greater question is not: Who else has tried it? But have you tried it? There are 8,000 promises in the Bible. I know one promise you tried and found to be full of power: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13). You could write after that verse … and it was so.
May I encourage you that the God who wrote the Word did so with foreknowledge; therefore, He knew what we would need. He is still holy in character; therefore, He cannot lie. That He is unchanging simply means that He is as powerful now as He was when He said, “… Let there be light: and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3). Go ahead and try the Word. What are the promises of God but Him encouraging you to try His Word?
